Summary

Vortek Construction Ltd. is owned by St. Albert family man Chris Bargy. Chris takes pride in his clients being 100% satisfied with his company's remediation and renovation work.

Describe your business

My company specializes in residential and commercial renovations including mould abatement. Depending upon the project I take the time to either discuss with the client their needs or I assess and diagnose an issue allowing for a detailed quote.

What made you decide to open this business?

After having worked in the industry from a young age I began to notice poor quality in homes or had heard negative experiences from many people. I wanted to provide completed renovations for homeowners in a professional manner where I was not forced to complete a project in a way that in my opinion wasn’t correct or the best solution, just to stay on budget.

What was it like when you first started?

The days were very long, working 12-16 hours, 7 days a week! It was a huge learning curve to change focus from being just a “worker bee” to also being a business owner. I was taking on the task of knowing the true cost of business.

What has surprised you most when owning a business?

“The true cost of business.” I have seen many companies come & go and known that they were in the same shoes as me. It can be a lot to take on; you now have employees, overhead costs, inventory, sourcing, sub trades, suppliers, etc. If you can’t maintain everything with diligence and competence it becomes very easy to lose control fast.

What would your customers say they love most about your business?

We always get the job done! We are problem solvers and as a small company, we ensure that all brainstorming is done to come up with the ideal way to overcome any obstacles that inevitably do pop up in renovations. Our #1 feedback tends to be about the pleasant experience with our employees.

Do you have any exciting plans for the future that you want customers to know about?

Recently we have been leaning into more commercial projects and are excited to expand further into this industry.

What is something most people don't know about the business?

Regarding renovations, the most common misunderstanding is the true complexity of a job. The many TV shows out tend to simply renovations which leaves me having to explain in detail that a job will typically have unforeseen obstacles that can only be addressed as they arise. This can often lead to time delays, extra costs and possible frustration but we are always there to complete the job.

Who are some of your business idols and role models? And why?

My father. He started in the industry on a whim after quitting his job at the saw mill to build houses. He has never looked back since and continues to build his business even while nearing retirement. I can walk into any of his spec homes or custom homes and see the quality of workmanship that extends beyond the basic requirements of building codes. This to me is a respect not only to the industry but also to the clients.

Why do you think it's important for people to shop local?

It’s important for people to shop local because small businesses are what communities thrive on. I try to use local St. Albert sub trades for all of our projects regardless of where they are located.

Do you have any advice that you want to share with other entrepreneurs?

Don’t give up! There will be times when you doubt yourself or the business but if you make it through the tough times, the good times are that much better.

What do you like most about being an entrepreneur?

The freedom of free time! It allows me time with my family. The ups of success and hitting those milestones you set for yourself.

What do you love about this neighborhood?

I love that this neighborhood has a small community feel while also having all the amenities of a city.

Where are your favorite places to go in the neighborhood?

My favorite places to go are the local restaurants, especially Jack’s Burger Shack, Nello’s and Sushi Park. I love the great fresh food and familiar faces.

What are your favorite things to do in the neighborhood?

I absolutely love the trail systems that St. Albert has. I am an avid mountain biker so when I can’t get to the mountains a long ride through the local trails does the trick. I’ve shared the passion with my family so these trails are very kid friendly.

What’s the most memorable experience you’ve had working with a customer?

Honestly, there’s many but it always comes down to seeing my client’s excitement when they view the final product. Seeing their love for the new space!
